Bed Hair Day, Cat Caricature.

8/1/2025

Embrace the chaos!

We’ve all experienced that moment: you wake up, look in the mirror, and are greeted by a wild mess of bed hair. It’s like your hair decided to throw a party while you slept, and you weren’t invited!

Picture this: a black cat, hair sticking up in every direction, looking utterly bewildered. It’s a relatable scene, isn’t it? Some days, our hair simply refuses to cooperate, and that’s perfectly okay.
Embrace the chaos! A bad hair day can be a reminder to not take ourselves too seriously. Whether you choose to tame the mane or rock the messy look, remember: it’s just hair, and tomorrow is a new day. So, let your hair have its fun—after all, who needs perfection when you can have personality?

A word from the artist

The art supplies I used to create this fun art work were the popular Copic Pens.
Picture

Would you believe that creating fun art is scarier for me that to create fine art?
Once I began working with the easy to use Copic Pens I relaxed and fell right into the fun mood of the artwork. With Valentine's help, we did it, and the first cat caricature video has been created; a short fun one to start with.

Why is it essential to remain active?

Picture

Staying physically active and exercising regularly is crucial for us seniors. It helps preserve fitness, strength, and balance while also enhancing cognitive function and mood. This, in turn, supports our ability to perform daily tasks and live independently.

Great for Eighty

I believe it's important for older adults like myself to be active every day. With my mobility and health issues to consider, I’ve set a goal to be the best I can be for my upcoming 80th birthday. I recently had a fall that I'm recovering from, and I often experience near falls. I also carry excess weight, which is partly due to my age and disabilities that limit my energy expenditure.
It’s crucial for me to focus not just on losing weight but also on retaining and even building muscle, while ensuring I don’t lose bone density. I aim to lose about 2 kg per month, which I think is a safe target as I work on improving my strength, balance, fitness, and flexibility at the same time. I’m excited to share my journey toward “Great for 80” with you!

Picture

Preparation - Self

I’ve consulted with a physiotherapist, a certified practicing dietitian (not just a nutrition nut), and a geriatrician before embarking on my self-guided program aimed at achieving my goals over the next 22 months.
It's important to talk to a health professional before starting any exercise program, especially if you have health issues, balance concerns, or mobility challenges. Many GPs and physiotherapists now offer telehealth appointments if you can’t visit in person.

Preparation - The Space

Picture
As I prepare to establish my exercise area in my small, cluttered unit, I need to consider a few things. Should I move chairs out of the living room? Would switching from my queen-sized bed to a single create more space, or can I manage to exercise in a smaller area?
To stay safe while I exercise, I’ll follow these tips:
  • I’ll clear my space of any obstacles like rugs, cords, and furniture to avoid tripping.
  • I’ll choose a well-lit area that’s comfortable, not too hot or cold. I have heater and overhead fans in both the bedroom and the front room, the two spaces I'm considering converting. to an exercise area,
  • Wearing comfortable clothing and well-fitting shoes are advised as a must. I will prefer to exercise barefoot.
  • I’ll remember to drink water before and after my workouts.
  • For balance exercises, I’ll need a sturdy chair nearby to hold onto, with a wall behind me for added support.  Finding a bear wall with a spot to put both me and a chair in front of me in my creative clutter of a unit, it's going to be a challenge.
  • I’ll start any new exercise slowly. Watching videos beforehand will help, and I’ll try the easier options first.  I will definitely be trying the easier ones first.
  • Exercising with someone could be a good idea for added safety.  I have a carer who comes for one hour most days. I could start off doing the exercises while she is in the unit do practical things to assist me.
  • I’ll keep my mobile phone within reach while exercising alone, just in case.
  • Muscle soreness can happen, especially after trying new exercises, but it should fade within a couple of days. If pain lasts longer, I’ll contact a health professional.
  • Listening to my body is key! If I feel pain, discomfort, or unsteady, I’ll adjust the exercise or skip it altogether. Seeking advice from an exercise specialist is always a good plan.
  • After a minor illness, I’ll ease back into my routine at a lower level before gradually increasing the intensity.
  • If I’ve had a major illness or hospitalization, I’ll consult my health professional for guidance on safely restarting my exercises.
By keeping these points in mind, I can create a safe and effective exercise routine for myself.
